Winter Park Resort is a ski area in Grand County, about 67 miles from downtown Denver over Berthoud Pass. It opened for the 1939/40 season and is still owned by the City and County of Denver, which leases it to Alterra Mountain Company. George Cranmer, Denver's manager of parks, pushed for its creation, and a run is named after him.
The resort has about 3,080 skiable acres, 23 lifts, 171 trails and 3,060 feet of vertical, up to a summit at 12,060 feet. It is made up of Winter Park and Mary Jane, plus Vasquez Ridge, Parsenn Bowl, Eagle Wind and the Vasquez Cirque. Mary Jane is known for its long mogul runs and tree skiing. Winter Park is also home to the National Sports Center for the Disabled, one of the largest adaptive ski programmes in the world.
Winter Park is on the Ikon Pass, with unlimited days. For a Saturday at the end of December 2026, a day ticket cost $267 at the window and $207 online. The resort opens for 2026/27 as soon as conditions allow, usually in November, and generally closes in late April.
Winter Park is the one Colorado resort you can reach by train. The Winter Park Express runs from Denver Union Station through the Moffat Tunnel to a platform at the base of the resort; Amtrak has confirmed it for 2026/27, but dates and fares had not been published in mid-October. In 2025/26 it ran Thursday to Sunday from January to March, plus holidays, leaving Denver at 7:00, with fares from $9 each way.
By car, take I-70 west to exit 232 and US 40 over Berthoud Pass, usually about 90 minutes from Denver.
