Berthoud Pass stands as a dramatic high-altitude gateway in central Colorado, connecting the communities of Empire and Winter Park. Situated at 11,307 feet, this route traverses the continental divide, offering visitors a striking view of the Rocky Mountains. The pass once had its own ski area, which closed in 2001, and its summit is now a popular start for backcountry skiing and for hikes along the Divide. The drive along U.S. Highway 40 presents a unique challenge, with steep grades reaching six percent and numerous switchbacks that demand careful attention.

The historical significance of the pass dates back to 1861, when Edward L. Berthoud and Jim Bridger surveyed the area. Although the terrain proved too rugged for the railroad routes initially proposed, it remained suitable for wagon travel, cementing its place in local history. Today, the pass serves as a critical link between Clear Creek and Grand counties, providing primary access to Winter Park and secondary access to Steamboat Springs.

Visitors experience the rugged beauty of the high country, with the landscape offering a stark and beautiful backdrop. The pass is not just a transit route but a gateway to the high alpine environment, inviting travelers to appreciate the natural grandeur of the region. As you navigate the steep grades, the changing scenery highlights the wild character of the Rocky Mountains, providing a memorable experience for those who brave the elevation.
