The Telluride Gondola functions as a free public transit system linking the historic town of Telluride with Mountain Village. This unique infrastructure opened on December 20, 1996, initially to improve local air quality and expand ski access. Today, it operates as a primary mode of transport for visitors navigating the San Juan Mountains. The ride spans two legs and four stations, beginning on Oak Street in Telluride and concluding at Gondola Plaza in Mountain Village. A mid-point stop at San Sophia Station provides direct access to ski slopes and hiking trails.
Operating daily from 6:30 a.m. to midnight during winter and summer seasons, the gondola extends its hours until 2:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays during peak periods. Passengers travel at an elevation of 10,500 feet, enjoying clear views of the surrounding peaks, which range from 13,000 to 14,000 feet. The area is renowned for its heavy snowfall, averaging 300 inches annually, and is frequently ranked among the top ski destinations in North America.
Visitors should anticipate long lines during busy times. The system may close temporarily without notice due to weather conditions or power outages. During off-season periods or such closures, free bus service connects the two communities. This reliable transit option offers a practical and scenic way to explore the region’s shops, restaurants, and outdoor activities without the need for a personal vehicle.
