Bear Creek Falls offers a serene escape just southwest of Telluride, Colorado. It lies in the Bear Creek Preserve. Located on the edge of the Uncompahgre National Forest, this destination is accessible via a dedicated trail that begins on South Pine Street. The hike is approximately 2.5 miles one way, involving a moderate 1,050-foot elevation gain that takes most visitors about an hour each way. The trail, which was originally a mining road, is now a multi-use path suitable for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, though visitors should exercise caution due to the shared nature of the dirt path.
The highlight of the visit is the waterfall itself, which tumbles in several tiers down a rocky cliff at the head of the canyon. The cascade is fed by snowmelt and rainfall from the surrounding San Juan Mountains, creating a dramatic visual with clear water and white foam at the base. The area is surrounded by dense vegetation, including spruce, fir and aspen, providing a lush, green backdrop to the rocky terrain.
Visitors should note that there are no facilities, such as restrooms or food vendors, directly at the falls. Amenities are available only in the nearby town of Telluride. The best time to visit is between late May and October, when the weather is favorable and the water flow is robust. This location is particularly popular for photography and enjoying the natural beauty of the Colorado landscape, offering a peaceful retreat for those seeking a moderate physical challenge in a stunning natural setting.
