Snowmass is the largest of the four ski mountains run by Aspen Skiing Company, about 8 miles from Aspen above Snowmass Village; the resort describes it as bigger than its other three mountains combined. It opened on 17 December 1967.
It has about 3,360 skiable acres and roughly 95 runs, from a base at about 8,100 feet to a summit at 12,510 feet. Its 4,406 feet of lift-served vertical is the biggest in Colorado. The terrain is mostly long, wide intermediate runs, with beginner areas near the village and steep terrain in the Hanging Valley, Cirque and Burnt Mountain areas. Most of the village lodging is ski-in, ski-out.
For 2026/27 the old Elk Camp quad has been replaced by a high-speed six-person chairlift, and the Ullrhof mid-mountain restaurant has reopened after rebuilding. The season is scheduled to run from 26 November 2026 to 11 April 2027.
One Aspen Snowmass lift ticket covers Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk. The full Ikon Pass gives seven days shared across the four, with no reservations, and from 2026/27 the Ikon Base Pass gives five days at Snowmass only. Aspen Snowmass also sells its own passes.
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is about 7 miles away, and free RFTA buses connect Snowmass Village with Aspen and the other mountains. In summer, Snowmass is used for mountain biking and hiking, and the Snowmass Rodeo runs on Wednesday evenings.
