Buttermilk Mountain, located just three miles northwest of Aspen, Colorado, is widely recognized as one of the best mountains in Colorado for beginner skiers and snowboarders. This resort offers a stress-free environment, characterized by wide, groomed runs that are ideal for first-time visitors and families teaching children. The terrain is divided into three distinct areas: Tiehack, which is popular with uphill skiers; the main Buttermilk section; and West Buttermilk, a mellow zone specifically designed for novices.
While the mountain is famous for its gentle learning slopes, it also caters to more advanced enthusiasts. It serves as the home of the X Games, featuring a 22-foot superpipe and an X Games-inspired course that attract expert riders. The resort opened in 1958 and has since expanded to offer a full range of amenities. Visitors can enjoy dining at the Cliffhouse at the summit, which provides scenic views of Pyramid Peak, or at the Buttermilk Mountain Lodge at the base. The mountain also hosts full moon dinners on select winter evenings, adding a unique cultural touch to the experience.
Open during the winter ski season, the resort is accessible via the free RFTA shuttle or personal vehicle. Lift tickets are shared with the other Aspen Snowmass mountains and prices vary by date. Beyond skiing, the area offers hiking trails during the summer months. With its friendly atmosphere, lack of crowds compared to neighboring peaks, and dedicated instruction programs, Buttermilk Mountain provides a welcoming and accessible winter sports experience for all skill levels.
