Located about four miles north of Mt. Crested Butte, Gothic is a historic former mining town beneath Gothic Mountain in the Elk Mountains at an elevation of 9,514 feet. Accessible via County Road 317, this area offers a unique blend of rugged natural beauty and scientific significance. The town’s history dates back to the late 1800s, when it served as a bustling silver mining hub with a population of approximately 1,000 residents. Although the mining boom ended, leaving the site nearly deserted by 1914, the area was revitalized in 1928 when Dr. John Johnson established the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory.
Today, Gothic serves as a vital hub for ecological research and outdoor exploration. Visitors can explore the historic remnants of the original settlement, including structures that have stood since the late 19th century. The area is particularly popular for its scientific programs, and in summer the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, which uses many of the old cabins, offers public talks and tours about its long-running ecological studies.
The surrounding landscape provides excellent opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers can follow scenic trails into the Elk Mountains, and the gravel road continues toward Emerald Lake and Schofield Pass, while winter visitors enjoy Nordic skiing, fat biking, and snowshoeing on the snow-covered terrain. In winter the road is closed to cars beyond Mt. Crested Butte, so Gothic is reached only on skis, snowshoes or fat bikes. Whether exploring the historic roots of the town or immersing oneself in the high-altitude wilderness, Gothic offers a serene and educational experience for visitors throughout the year.
