The Saguache County Courthouse stands in the town of Saguache, the county seat of Saguache County, at the northern end of the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado. Saguache County is large and thinly populated, a country of ranches, hay meadows and wide, dry valley floor, bounded by the Sangre de Cristo Range on one side and the San Juan Mountains on the other. The courthouse is the working center of its local government, home to county offices and the courts, and it gives a small, quiet town a firm civic anchor.

Saguache is a place with real depth. The name is generally traced to a Ute word, often translated as blue earth or the water at the blue earth, and the Ute people knew this country long before it had a town. Chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta lived in the area in the 1870s, and Saguache grew as a ranching and supply town at the junction of routes crossing the valley. The county itself includes part of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, the high ranges to the east and a stretch of the upper valley, along with the small community of Crestone, known for its many spiritual centers.

Visitors should treat the courthouse as an exterior sight. The building houses county offices that are open for official business during normal working hours, and it is not a museum. The easiest way to enjoy it is to walk around the square, look at the building from the street and compare it with the other older storefronts of the town. The site is quiet and easy to reach on foot, and there are no admission fees or exhibits.

Travelers should plan fuel and food stops in advance. U.S. Highway 285 passes through the town, and it provides a scenic route between Poncha Pass to the north and the middle of the valley to the south. Those who like local history can ask at the town's small museum about frontier life, ranching and the Ute presence.

The courthouse suits drivers who like small county seats, history enthusiasts and anyone crossing the valley who wants a moment on a quiet main street in one of Colorado’s quieter county seats. It makes a natural stop on a longer loop that includes the Sangre de Cristo Range, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve and the Rio Grande National Forest.
