The Culebra Range is the southernmost major subrange of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colorado, rising east of the San Luis Valley and running south toward the New Mexico line. Its best-known summit is Culebra Peak, which reaches 14,047 feet and is generally counted as the southernmost fourteener in the Rocky Mountains. It is not the highest peak in the Sangre de Cristo, a title that belongs to Blanca Peak, at 14,345 feet, in the neighboring Sangre de Cristo massif. Other high summits in the Culebra Range include De Anza Peak.

Most of the range is private ranchland, and Culebra Peak is one of the few Colorado fourteeners that is not freely open to hikers. Climbers have normally needed to book access through the landowner for a fee on set dates, so anyone who wants the summit should confirm the current arrangements well ahead of time. For everyone else, the range works as a scenic backdrop, seen from the roads, the town and the valley below, where its long ridgelines catch the first and last light of the day.

The gateway is the town of San Luis, reached by Colorado Highway 159. Founded in 1851 as San Luis de la Culebra, it is regarded as the oldest continuously inhabited town in the state, and its Hispanic heritage is visible in the layout of the plaza, in the Church of the Most Precious Blood and in the long irrigation tradition around the People's Ditch. Culebra Creek, fed by snowmelt from the range, flows through this country and shaped the farms and fields that the first settlers built. The pedestrian-only San Luis Bridge over the creek gives a quiet viewpoint and links the town to the water.

Visitors can approach the range from several angles. Walking in the historic district shows the culture that grew beneath it, while the nearby Rio Grande National Forest and San Luis State Park offer public land for hiking, camping and wildlife watching. Travelers in the high country should expect changeable weather, with afternoon storms in summer and heavy snow in winter, so check conditions before heading out.

The range suits people who enjoy remote scenery, mountaineers who plan ahead for access, photographers and anyone interested in the way landscape and settlement shaped one of Colorado's oldest communities. Nearby, the San Luis Plaza and San Luis Historic District fill out a half day on foot, while the Culebra Canyon area gives a feel for the creek valley.
