Nestled in Ford Park just east of Vail Village, the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens offers a serene escape into high-altitude botany. Established in 1986, this unique five-acre sanctuary is North America’s only botanical garden dedicated specifically to preserving alpine plant species and habitats. Located at an elevation of 8,200 feet, the gardens provide a permanent home for fragile alpine ecosystems that might otherwise be lost to climate change.

Visitors can explore winding trails that showcase over 3,000 alpine species from around the globe. Key highlights include the renowned Alpine Rock Garden, the Betty’s Market for children, and the Alpine Meadow. The current "Passport to the Peaks" exhibit displays alpine flora from international regions, allowing guests to learn about global conservation efforts at the adjacent Education Center. The site also features a seed-banking program designed to protect rare species.

Entry to the gardens is free year-round, with a suggested $20 donation to support ongoing maintenance and conservation. The grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk, while the Education Center operates Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. For those driving, the Vail Village Parking Structure is a convenient option, located just a seven- to ten-minute walk from the entrance. Alternatively, the Ford Park Parking Lot offers direct access. The gardens are easily reachable via Exit 176 off I-70, situated approximately a quarter-mile past the transportation center. Whether you are interested in horticulture, photography, or simply enjoying mountain views, the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens provides a peaceful and educational experience for all ages.
